Coding and Animation

Children will unleash their imagination by bringing stories and scenes to life with block-based coding! As they create animated adventures, they’ll sharpen their logical thinking and sequencing skills – all while having fun!

Introduce young children to the exciting world of coding with ScratchJr, a fun and hands-on platform designed to enable preschoolers to grasp the basics of block-based programming.

Children will learn to create their own animated stories – complete with characters, backgrounds, sound effects and dialogue.  

Curriculum Approach

  • Our coding and animation programme focuses on fostering creativity, critical thinking, and foundational coding skills through the playful and interactive platform, ScratchJr. 
  • Designed specifically for young children, our curriculum explores the world of programming in bite-sized segments, making it fun and accessible for junior learners.
  • Through a series of guided activities, children will experiment with characters, objects and backgrounds, learning how to make them move, dance, sing, and interact. They will then create animated stories and personalise their projects with their own voices, sounds effects and photos.
  • Duration: 1 hour once a week
  • Age: 6 to 8

Curriculum Objectives

We aim to make coding an enjoyable and meaningful experience that sparks curiosity and a lifelong interest in technology. Our programme seeks to enable children to:

  • Foster an interest in coding and animation
  • Understand fundamental coding concepts
  • Build logical thinking and sequencing skills
  • Develop problem-solving skills, as they figure out how to bring their ideas to life
  • Enhance their creativity and self-expression by designing and animating their own stories

Programme Outline

Basics of Coding:

  • Lessons include:
  • Children will have fun exploring ScratchJr and learning to use all its tools – from creating different backgrounds and learning about sequencing and transitions, to modifying characters and making them move and interact with one another.
  • Experimenting with movement commands
  • Learning about sequencing, while making characters race one another
  • Exploring different programming blocks and using sounds to make characters move, dance and interact
  • Learning how to programme characters to greet one another and using different methods to create conversations between characters

Introduction to Animation:

  • After learning the basics of programming, children will discover how to apply these skills to create simple animated scenes, with various characters, sequences and backgrounds. 
  • Lessons include:
  • Creating new backgrounds
  • Programming multiple characters
  • Creating speech bubbles
  • Recording sounds or music and timing it to coincide with a character’s movement

Creating Animated Stories:

  • Children will create their own animation based on well-known classics, such as ‘Little Red Riding Hood’, ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and ‘The Gingerbread Man’.
  • They will create their own backgrounds, select the characters, add sounds, music and dialogue, and bring these stories to life.
